On Thursday, August 26, 2021, Gov. JB Pritzker and Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike announced that all teachers and staff, prekindergarten through grade 12, as well as higher education personnel and students, will be required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine or submit to weekly COVID testing through an enhanced protocols program. This rule will go into effect on September 5.
In addition, the governor has ordered a statewide indoor mask mandate that will apply to all Illinois residents age 2 and older. This rule begins on Monday, August 30.
These rules are intended to help slow the recent rapid increases in COVID-19 Delta variant infections and the number of patients requiring ICU beds across the state.
