Illinois Legislators to Consider a Bill Requiring Children to Start School by Age Five

Illinois legislators are considering a bill that says children must start kindergarten by age 5 instead of 6. The proposed law, Senate Bill 2075, requires that children attend kindergarten if they are 5 on or before May 31, but would allow parents of 5-year-olds with summer birthdays a choice as to whether to wait an additional year.

The bill passed the Illinois Senate 39-16 on April 12th and is currently in the Illinois House Rules Committee.
