Mother talking to two children

IECAM has updated its interactive map for the languages spoken at home for children birth to age 5 in Illinois. We now have 2012–2019 data for the Top 10 languages (other than English and “unknown”) by Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMAs).

This interactive feature includes four maps to make it easier to see the languages spoken statewide as well as in Cook County and the collar counties, Cook County alone, and Chicago.

Users who check out several years of data may notice that four languages always appear in the Top 10: Spanish, Polish, Arabic, and Chinese, which includes those reporting as speaking Chinese, Mandarin, and Cantonese.

Languages that drop in and out of the Top 10 include Filipino-Tagalog, Hindi, Urdu, French, Russian, German, Gujarathi, and Telugu.

Recent entries to the Top 10 include Rumanian in 2017 and Niger-Congo in 2016, 2018, and 2019.
