Language numbers are provided for:

  • Number of households
  • Number of households speaking Spanish at home that are limited English-speaking households
  • Number of households speaking other non-English languages at home that are limited English-speaking households

Source of data: IECAM demographers prepared estimates of population based on Census Bureau estimates for the following programs or surveys:

  • Population Estimates Program
  • American Community Survey, 5-year estimates

Geographic region: These data are available for the following geographic areas: state, county, township, municipality, IL state senate district, IL state house district, US Congressional district, Elementary School District, Unit School District, Zip Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA), Chicago Community Area, and by ISBE region and IDHS region, which are sums of counties.

Note: The U.S. Census Bureau defines “limited English-speaking” as follows:

A limited English-speaking household is one in which no member 14 years old and over (1) speaks only English or (2) speaks a non-English language and speaks English “very well.” In other words, all members 14 years old and over have at least some difficulty with English.
